Clayton County Board of Commissioners Pick Up Paper for the Holidays

Date: Saturday, November 19, 2011

Time: 9:00 am - 12:00 pm

PUPJonesboro, GA - The Clayton County Board of Commissioners is taking litter into their own hands by initiating the "Pick Up Paper (PUP) Campaign." Many Clayton County families will be expecting out-of-town guests, so as residents clean their homes in preparation, the Commissioners would like to present a tidy community as well.

The first in a series of "PUP" days is scheduled for Saturday, November 19, 2011, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. Through the generous donations of local community "PUP Partners," trash bags and disposable gloves will be provided. Pick-up locations for trash bags and gloves, as well as drop-off locations for collected trash, will be announced for each district in Clayton County via the campaign's Facebook page.

Litter removal costs U.S. businesses, governments, schools, nonprofits, and other entities more than $11 billion each year. Businesses absorb $9.1 billion of these costs alone. According to a litter study conducted by Keep America Beautiful, more than 51 billion pieces of litter end up on U.S. roadways each year. Nearly all of it is less than four inches in size.

As the holiday shopping season approaches, retailers are encouraged to join the campaign as a "PUP Partner." Businesses interested in participating may organize an employee team and register their team's name online, or they may donate any of the following items (donors will be recognized):

Trash bags, disposable gloves, and/or hand sanitizer
Merchandise or gift cards for PUP team winners
Refreshments for participants

A prize will be awarded to the team collecting the most trash bags.
